7 Tips To Protect Yourself From Lead Contaminated Water

06/11/2021 shannon Comments Off

There are plenty of water contaminants that might be detrimental to health, but Lead is one of the most dangerous of them all. It is a toxic metal that leaves no visual signs and noticeable taste or odor in the water. Corroded water with high acidity and low mineral content corrode Lead or Copper pipes and fixtures, introducing lead to your drinking water. If you live in a house built before 1991, you probably have Lead in your household plumbing system.

Effects of Lead on Health

Lead has detrimental effects on health involving cardiovascular diseases, infertility, decreased kidney functions, increased blood pressure in adults. However, kids and infants are more vulnerable to lead because it affects them at a lower exposure than adults and can be linked with learning disabilities, impaired functions of blood cells, and damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Therefore, it is necessary to check your water for Lead contamination. Here are a few ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from Lead contaminated water:

  1. Get Your Tap Water Tested for Lead: The authorities test the community-wide plumbing system for lead, but your own home might still have internal plumbing materials that contain lead. Since there’s nothing to see, taste, or smell to alert you about the contamination, the only way to confirm is to get it tested. Different labs have distinct sets of instructions, but when collecting the samples, they are from the first few drops of tap water for the day. It is also vital not to use the pipes for 6 hours before the sample collection since corrosion usually happens overnight.
  2. Let the Tap Run: It is vital to let the water flush out of the pipes for a minimum of five minutes before consuming it. It may seem like waste, but it is a precaution for your health. This can be done while taking a shower, washing dishes, or doing the laundry to avoid waste.
  3. Drink Cold Tap Water: It is better to drink cold tap water because warm or hot water is more likely to contain elevated lead levels. Do not boil the water as it will only concentrate the Lead content.
  4. Install A Water Filter: Installing a water filter certified to remove Lead by NSF International is an added protection to any household. Watch out for the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and replacing the filter cartridges.
  5. Replace Pipes and Fixtures: It is best to determine if you have any lead-containing pipes and fixtures in your home to ensure safety from lead contamination. Avail of the service of a certified plumber and change any lead piping. Contact the authorities of your city if you find any pipeline connected to the overall city line.
  6. Protect the Children and Infants: Use filtered water only to prepare food and drinks for babies, kids, and pregnant women as they are more vulnerable to the effects of lead.
  7. Maintain Faucet Aerators: Remove and clean individual faucet aerators, as lead particles and sediments can collect in the aerator screen.
